Hearing Aid Fitting
The entry level hearing aids are free for pensioners and DVA clients under Australian Government’s Hearing Services Program (HSP). Joy of Hearing is accredited to provide subsidy from HSP for pensioners and DVA to purchase top up hearing aids if you choose to go that way. If you do decide to place an order, your hearing solution can arrive within a couple of days and we will contact you to come in for your fitting appointment. This lasts 30-60 minutes depending on your prior experience of hearing aids. You will be shown how to wear your new devices, how to charge them up or change batteries, how to clean and care for them. There will be some tests carried out to ensure the hearing aids are set at a level that is comfortable and helpful for you; for new users we can keep the amplification low until you get used to your new sound, and then gradually turn it up.
7-day Obligation FREE Trial
It’s over to you to road test your new devices at home, work, in the pub, at family gatherings – wherever you are going! We offer a 7-day FREE trial so that you can be fully confident that you have made the right decision before you purchase them. After the Trial we will meet for follow up appointment to respond to any queries or concerns you may have, and to check that you are making the most of the features of the hearing aids. Once you are satisfied that you are benefitting from your new system, and you are comfortable with all the options, the invoice can be settled. To make it even better you will get an additional 3 weeks of change of mind return period after the purchase of devices.

Ear Wax Removal
Quick Ear Wax Removal Service in Northwest Tasmania. Don’t suffer with blocked ears!
If you are looking for swift, effective treatment for ears blocked by wax, you can BOOK ONLINE or CONTACT US today. We can offer appointments at our clinics at short notice, with a short application of oil recommended before your treatment. Olive oil is preferred as it lubricates the ear and allows the wax to be removed easily and quickly.
Please find a link to our frequently asked questions.
Why do we have ear wax?
This is one of the questions we are most often asked. Wax is not a result of poor hygiene as many people think – it is produced by the ear to trap dirt and lubricate the skin. It also provides anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties – ensuring the ear is kept healthy.
Ear wax usually moves naturally out of the ears as we talk, chew and yawn and some people will never be affected by a build up, but for others it can be a real problem.
How should I clean my ears?
The best way to clean the ears is to use a warm washcloth when in the shower, and gently clean the outer ear up to the opening of the ear canal only. NEVER use cotton buds as you could damage your ears. They also may compact the ear wax – making it impossible to come out in the usual way. Also, using cotton buds stimulates the ear canal to produce more wax and exacerbates the problem!
When enough is enough.
In itself ear wax isn’t a problem, but if left to build up and become impacted, it can cause many symptoms including:
- Earache
- Reduced Hearing
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Dizziness
- Coughing Reflex
- Hearing aids stop working or squeal
- Skin irritation.
- Trapped water and infection
Why Us?
It can take a long time to get an appointment with a GP or practice nurse to have wax removed; indeed many GP practices no longer offer the service.
As you would expect our approach to clearing your ears leaves nothing to chance, employing the safest methods and sterile hygienic equipment.
We offer ear wax removal using either microsuction or irrigation (sometimes known as ear syringing).
- Micro suction Ear wax removal
Ear wax removal by micro-suction is a gentle, pain-free process that uses a fine, low pressure suction pump to safely remove ear wax from blocked ears. A qualified audiologist will examine your ears using a video otoscope (camera). We will then show you the extent of the wax blockage (if you wish) before suction treatment and your clear ear canals after the treatment.
There is no need to apply oil for weeks before your appointment, but a few drops in the nights before your appointment are helpful to slightly soften the wax and lubricate the ear. In most cases wax can be removed in one visit, very occasionally a free follow up a few days later is required.*
- Irrigation Earwax Removal
There is no need to apply oil for several days before your appointment, but a single treatment the night before is helpful to slightly soften the wax and lubricate the ear. In most cases wax can be removed in one visit, very occasionally a free follow up a few days later is required.
* Subject to return visit being part of the same treatment
Tinnitus Management
Tinnitus does not have a cure yet, but treatments that help many people cope better with the condition are available. There will be a combination of the treatments below may help, depending on the severity of your tinnitus and the areas of your life it affects the most.
- Hearing aids often are helpful for people who have hearing loss along with tinnitus. Using a hearing aid adjusted to carefully control outside sound levels may make it easier for you to hear. The better you hear, the less you may notice your tinnitus.
- Counselling helps you learn how to live with your tinnitus. Most counselling programs have an educational component to help you understand what goes on in the brain to cause tinnitus. Some counselling programs also will help you change the way you think about and react to your tinnitus. You might learn some things to do on your own to make the noise less noticeable, to help you relax during the day, or to fall asleep at night. Two main therapies are available
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
- Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT)
- Wearable sound generators are small electronic devices that fit in the ear and use a soft, pleasant sound to help mask the tinnitus. Some people want the masking sound to totally cover up their tinnitus, but most prefer a masking level that is just a bit louder than their tinnitus. The masking sound can be a soft white noise, random tones, or music.
- Tabletop sound generators are used as an aid for relaxation or sleep. Placed near your bed, you can program a generator to play pleasant sounds such as waves, waterfalls, rain, or the sounds of a summer night. If your tinnitus is mild, this might be all you need to help you fall asleep.
- Acoustic neural stimulation is a relatively new technique for people whose tinnitus is very loud or won’t go away. It uses a palm-sized device and headphones to deliver a broadband acoustic signal embedded in music. The treatment helps stimulate change in the neural circuits in the brain, which eventually desensitizes you to the tinnitus. The device has been shown to be effective in reducing or eliminating tinnitus in a significant number of study volunteers.
At Joy of hearing, we are here to help you find the appropriate
solution to get relief from tinnitus which may include referrals for therapy.
